Brian King was once in The Wineskins. We called him Bennie. He was a mess. Everyone loved him. You couldn't help it. He made everybody feel good, but he couldn't make himself do so. We wrote this for Bennie, and for us.
lyrics
We are standing
On the Arkansas side
look there across the river
look there across the river
We are standing
On the Arkansas side
Mississippi calling
Mississippi calling
Bennie almost passed away
sunken eyes, he lost way too much weight
he walked to the river and washed his face
"I need some river on my skin to make me feel alive again"
We are standing
On the Arkansas side
look there across the river
look there across the river
We are standing
On the Arkansas side
Mississippi calling
Mississippi calling
a heart and soul is bound to a place
it's the garden for familiar grace
we came West to the Arkansas line
To stand with a friend who almost died
And Old Man river seems wider now than it did
seems darker and stranger to us now
standing here on the other side
the angel of death makes you squint your eyes
We watched the sun go down that day
We even bowed our heads and prayed
not for healing or miracles at all..
as I recall we didn't say a thing..
We are standing
On the Arkansas side
look there across the river
look there across the river
We are standing
On the Arkansas side
Mississippi is calling us home
Mississippi is calling us home
