I was reading about the Chickasaw one afternoon. Hernando Desoto was man of his time. He was stalwart, and craved adventure. He was also brutal. So much so, that word had spread to the tribes along the Mississippi River, and they took no chances when he appeared. This is a true story.
lyrics
Desoto County Mississippi,
You were named after a man,
Who came here seeking routes to China,
Forever changing this land.
Forever changing this land.
He and his men made their way south,
Traveling hard for weeks on end.
They came upon the Big Muddy,
Too loud to speak too wide to swim.
They saw Chickasaw on the shore,
Clear across on the other side.
They started waving cause the river was wide,
Those Chickasaw, they did oblige.
Desoto asked for a volunteer
To go across and greet those men.
One fella stepped up to Hernando,
Desoto, said it should be him.
Desoto County Mississippi,
You were named after a man,
Who came here seeking routes to China,
Forever changing this land.
He would row across the river.
He would greet the Chickasaw.
He would bring some Spanish booty,
it to their Chief he would bestow.
The Chickasaw kept waving kindly,
Just waiting calmly for the man.
And when he docked they ran to greet him,
And killed him right there in the sand.
Desoto County Mississippi,
you were named after a man,
Who came here seeking routes to China,
Forever Changing this land.
Forever changing this fair land...
