This is what it feels like in a Mississippi summer to me. Languid, humid, fresh, hot black top, tar melting and oozing beneath the vapid spinning tires. Alone on a tractor.. smoking a pipe, driving down HWY 6, straight into a thunder storm. Nothing like it.
lyrics
I walked outside into the heat
humidity high and the dogs were asleep
I crawled on the tractor and lit my pipe
Wouldn't care if it rained...
Sometimes Sanctuary comes to a man
alone on his tractor doing the best he can
Sometimes Sanctuary's buried in the land
This red clay earth he's given to understand
we drove to Clarksdale in a thunder storm
Dark clouds ominous and brutal in their beauty
We smoked and laughed listening to R.L. Burnside
windows down, hearts high and free
Sometimes Sanctuary comes to friends
In an old blue Buick on HWY 6
Sometimes Sanctuary's hiding in a song
Laughing with the storms we've always known
There is wisdom growing in these fields of soy bean and cotton
Work and sweat, worn out and sore,
driving home in the light
as God paints another SUNDOWN Mississippi SKY.
Sometimes Sanctuary comes in the darkness
in the soft light of smoking and reading
Sometimes Sanctuary comes in sweet sleep
when we are given that sweet sweet dream.
